First to our shores will be the Thomson Dream, which is their biggest ship yet. In fact, it’s 30% more spacious than most other ships in its class. Not only does it give you more room, it’s more stylish, too. Sounds OK !!

In the second week of October, when it comes to cruise traffic in Santa Cruz, seven ships with 15,350 cruise passengers aboard, 1,700 more than the current week, and 4,500 crew give a total of 19,800 visitors, to the island. Let's hope some of them spend

Haha! My first response was "the crew won't spend bugger all!" They don't get paid enough.

Re: The cruises are back
The port of Santa Cruz is preparing for the arrival of 25,700 visitors next week
Between 15 and 21 October - a movement of 19,300 cruise passengers, a figure that will account for the third consecutive increase in traffic will join 6400 crew, which amount to 25,700 visitors distributed among nine vessels.
Friday the 19th will be the first day of the new 2012-2013 season

Re: The cruises are back
Never will understand why Los Cristianos authorities don,t invest in the harbour to enable cruise ships to dock there, what a boost it would give the whole area, most people on cruises go ashore when their ships dock and even if they only bought drinks and the odd gift it would be a boost to local traders and theme parks would also benefit, and taxi drivers would also gain by taking passengers to and from ships, the same applies to hotels as lots of people arrive before their cruise or want to stay for a few days post cruise, worth an investment in my opinion

Re: The cruises are back
I remember last year for some reason a couple of cruise ships stopped outside of Los Cris and you could see the passengers coming in by smaller boats. There were hundreds of them and being a weekend they were all rushing to the Sunday Market, you couldn´t move along the seafront. Whether this gave the authorities a clue I don´t know but in March this year THIS article appeared.
So it looks as if we could see them next month.

Re: The cruises are back
Can you imagine the disruption, The thing to do would be build it elsewhere, Like nearer to palm mar, Otherwise Fred and Armas would have nowhere to operate, The harbour is just not big enough as it is, A massive undertaking and investment, But a good idea, Wonder where the money would come from ?

Re: The cruises are back
The disruption can be managed by good planning , the ships shown in gypsies post are far too small to make a significant impact on the area, what is required are facilities to allow the big 3000 plus passenger ships to dock , if Santorini can cope with 10,000 passengers at a time using chair lifts and donkeys to transport passengers into town I,m sure Los Cristianos could manage very easily, yes a small dock in Palm mar would be a good idea for people going on excursions to other parts of the island, they could be bussed from Palm Mar and back and as the place has very little else going for it that would be a real shot in the arm for them[they could be tendered to and from the ships]
As for the cost I think Royal Carribean helped to pay for the huge new docking facilities for the Oasis of the seas [ 5000+passengers] so perhaps the same could happen for Los Cristianos and the E.E.C. would probably help as well

Re: The cruises are back
I recall five or so years back there was a big article
in one of the Tenerife freebies about developing the harbour at Los Cris to
take cruise ships, there was an artist’s impression of the proposed
development, it was a pretty space age looking terminal building etc, in my opinion
would have spoiled Los Cris. Recall posting something about this subject some time
back, done a search at the time to see if I could come up with anything on the
proposed development but drew a blank.

I remember that Adam, there were drawings of the proposed new harbour and a shopping centre but like you having searched I can´t find any reference to it.

Re: The cruises are back
It would be nice to see but I can't honestly see Los Cristianos giving much competition to Santa Cruz.(Or Fanabe, Palm Mar or wherever).
