    Ski Lifts...
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-21434338
Ski lifts, having been stuck sitting on them a few times when they come to the more than occasional stop, the longest I have experience being about an hour, I often would sit there (apart from freezing) thinking why is this contraption designed to support the occupants so far above the ground when there is no need to do so, I accept depending on the terrain between support columns the need for height in some cased is necessary, but for the majority of the distance being traveled the lift chair need only be a few feet above the ground. I’d rather decant from say 6 to 8 feet rather than 20...

Probably 20 feet to clear any possible snow drifts I would think...

    I thought about that, but 20ft !
Recall when we went skiing as kids, when the chair lift came to a stop we would bounce up and down in the chairs and get all the chairs bouncing, seemed to upset the adults a bit, understood why when I got a bit older, feckin little bas#ards should be barred...

Is that why telegraph poles are so high!!!
Seem to recall seeing telegraph poles somewhere that were only about six feet high, may not have been the uk ???

6 meter poles are our smallest now, no point in them being smaller as you would need shorter span lengths hence more poles to keep the wires above reachable hand height. (Even wires in back gardens have to be a minimum of 3m above ground). 68m is our maximum span length, but that is more to do with the tensile strength of the wires themselves than the pole strength.
