    Keep the monument, put a new plaque on it an dedicate it to something else...simples.

    I'd leave as is as a reminder. Let people do with it as they want then. Supporters will clean it. Opponents will vandalise it. Don't see the point in brushing these things under the carpet. It is what it is, things happened, no point pretending they didn't.
