Both the driver and his assistant were arrested because they did not have the proper authorisations and their vehice was impounded.

I don't think your travel insurance is invalid. I queried this regarding private let apartments last year. The answer I got back was if an accident happened while abroad, IRRESPECTIVE or where it occurred, then the insurance is valid ( at least my policy was ). The motor insurance on the car however, would be ( invalid)

Travel insure is one of the most useless bit of papers to buy,its just another mental cushion to make 
people feel less scared about leaving their villages ....if you a homeless roman and you turn up at a hospital with no papers via a road accident in an Ambulance then you are covered to some extent via the Spanish national health . if you show them TRAVEL INSURANCE then ´you´ have to pay for the lot,its the PPI of flying  .
as for ´mates´´ try telling the police local who is there to make an example that he should not fine you . its Napoleonic law - once you have been issued with the ticket you are guilty unless you can prove you are not . in most cases it will be around €80 and they will have your NIE to put into the state computer and watch the time TRAFICO pull you over on the autopista .this applies to anyone in the vehicle

That's fine just like us picking McQ up (except he doesn´t let us know he is coming !!)  It is the 'friends' that expect payment they are clamping down on.  They can also pick them up by the number of times they visit the airport because the have cctv checking the number plates  (allegedly)

if you go into the car park and pay and ask the machine for a receipt ,it has your spanish number plate on it ,so they must read it when you drive in .i notice this coz my car has a UK black and silver metal plate and it cant read this ,but it can read a modern UK plate .
