Searcher (Bill), had an idea to give a "Jock" word everyday with it's meaning, well I've taken it a bit further and have made a new category for ALL unusual words and their meanings. So, search yourlocal dialect to come up with some weird words that are used in your area and tell us what it means!

I'll start: "Baffies"....Slippers. (Mostly used on East coast of Scotland) Unusual words we use and their local meanings. 4226408756

Inverness...from the Gaelic Inbhir Nis meaning the mouth of the river Ness.

Brig O' Turk (Tiny hamlet in the Trossachs) from the amalgamation of lowland Scots and Gaelic Bridge of Tuirc meaning bridge of the boar.

Famous one...John O' Groats. This is a simple corruption of a Dutchman's name Jan de Groot, who used to run a ferry from here back in the day.

Freeze the balls off a brass monkey.......Navy term, the Monkey was the rack the cannon balls sat in, this was brass. The balls were usually lead or a mix and the different metals reacted differently to the cold. If the balls rolled off the Monkey, they were too cold to fire.

Yep, the brass "monkey" or tray contracted faster than the balls which "squeezed" them out.
