Leper Colony, Abadas

This place was much bigger than I had originally thought. This is a photo from  near the beach in Abadas. To get there, take the motorway north and then take the Abadas turn off. At the little roundabout at the top of the turn, head towards Abadas village down at the coast. Park anywhere near the beach and the colony is on the hill overlooking the beach.

It seemed like a very big church for such a small community until I looked around

I think this must have been some sort of communal canteen

Inside wasn't nice but was surprisingly modern. There were tiled showers with hot and cold water and all the floors were tiled as well. Just goes to show that this place wasn't part of the middle ages, but was in use in the 20th century.

Finally, as I was leaving I noticed some of the brush wasn't the same colour as the rest. On closer inspection, there were pile of rusty barbed wire dotted all over the place. The colony was obviously guarded. I wonder if the inmates went there volintarily or maybe they simply hadn't got anywhere else to go.

I know people who have spent time there and it is very creepy, I know you will laugh but I do believe it is haunted. I remember saying something about this in a blog I wrote a while ago

Anyone approaching Abades can see the building topped with a huge cross, this is the church part of the would be leper colony and behind it there are over 30 buildings in various states of completion which should have housed a hospital, recreation rooms, residential areas and a school.  The project was however abandoned when cures for leprosy were found in the 1940s and the leper colony never received a single sick patient.
The abandoned town was later used as a military camp where soldiers used the finished buildings as barrack blocks.  In later years, it has been used for outdoor events, festivals, rallies and even the odd film set.  .....

Thanks Gypsy. Can you give me a link to that particular blog? Kev was saying that its built in such a way as to make you confused when trying to find your way back out. There isn't a nice "vibe" about the place at all. Feckin uncomfortable at times actually.

A bit like churches, something to do with death innit...

But this is what was published last year.  Ordinarily I would say tosh but I know Marc, Linda and Becky well so if they felt it was strange then I believe them.  Table Dancing !!

What place?  Do you mean the one at Palm Mar, if so it looks to be doing well but still early days may just be marketing bumph...

Good, So Janet was just nodding off and i said Skylight ? I knew i was right because she didnt reply and if i was wrong she couldnt help but be smug and say wrong, Her last words were I spy with my little eye something begining with S, That shut her up and i slept soundly and i bet she was seething

If we had played i spy when we were 18 we wouldnt be surrounded by kids    No TV either

Our youngest, Laura, used to say anything when playing I-spy. Didn't matter what letter it was. She'd say "something beginning with "P", then after we couldn't get it, tell you it was "Sheep"! Weird...
