Spain’s National Geographic Institute reported an earthquake yesterday off Gran Canaria.
Leading seismologist Ithaysa Dominguez said the ‘quake, measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale, occurred at around 3.15pm yesterday afternoon and was centred some 30km deep around five miles off the southeast coast of the island.
Experts say the earthquake is within the normal parameters of seismic events in the islands, such as last year’s tremor between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, which measured 4 on the Richter scale, and said they are not a cause for alarm.
Meanwhile, the seismic activity recorded on El Hierro continues with 30 minor tremors, measuring between 1.5 and 2 degrees on the Richter scale, recorded yesterday alone.
The latest seismic movements in El Hierro bring the total recorded since July 19 to more than 3,000.
