Hi from the Who Empty Hi from the Who

    Post by whomimaybe Mon 13 Nov 2017 - 18:00

Hi folks.  I found a link to this forum on Tripadvisor and just signed up.  I am hoping to find hiking partners as I am an avid hiker. I am here with my wife but hiking is not her passion (albeit she does like short evening walks).  Is there anyone looking for some company on the trails?

My wife and I are from Who?ville (AKA Canada) and are here until Christmas (more or less).  We've been touring the Canary Islands for the last month seeing if any Island strikes our fancy as a good place to retire.  We're relatively new to the retirement scene and exploring to find a place that we both enjoy.  Anyplace that's warm and has mountain's works for me, so I'm looking forward to exploring Tenerife.  Earlier today I had coffee with a group called the Swallows (also found them through tripadvisor) and already have a date tomorrow with a walkers sub-group.  The more opportunities the merrier so please contact me if you are interested.

    Cheers,

    Who

Oh, and if your more sensible like me, throw the bike in the boot of the bus that goes up once a day and roll down,,, simples innit, done it twice...

Lots of walkers go up on bus, leaves PDLA and Los Cris about 08:00, sits all day at the cable car bit, then back down about 16:00, giving walkers best part of day to explore...

If you are on Tripadviser check out Gary (user name TenerifeRambler) he lives in the south of the island and is a really nice guy.  He retired here and hikes most days.   That link might or might not work, but you can find him in the side column on TA's Tenerife forum as he is an 'expert'.

All those who come for the winter to the island are called 'Swallows' bit like Florida Snowbirds.  They do lots of things art clubs, bridge, dinner groups so you wife might find something that suits too.

There is also a walking group that leave Palm Mar each week for a couple of hours hiking.  They post on facebook in the Palm Mar Group you might want to contact them.

We do this at home where there is a descent bike trail (or in some cases a ski resort with a chairlift open and adapted to accommodate bikes).    We were on Grand Canaria before coming to Tenerife.  We passed many bikers doing something similar... but ON THE ROAD.  We tried really hard not to run any off the road and managed... albeit they really tested our benevolence.  Biking on a narrow roadway without adequate shoulders is anything but sensible.  I trust there is a separate bike trail to follow.

We exchanged emails yesterday.  I'm waiting for him to send his schedule for the next month.

I looked on Facebook and found the Palm Mar Tenerife group.  I also found a reference to them on Tripadvisor indicating they meet on Tuesdays outside Clueseau's at 10:30.  I have already committed to a walk with the Swallows today so I can't be there, but if I can communicate on Facebook maybe I can hiking companions to hook up with later.  Thanks.

On the bike/Tiede subject, I've only ever come down the road, it's a decent two lane road and not very busy so didn't find traffic a problem, I have spoke to people who have used off road tracks to come down but I personally don't know where they are/go...

There is a company that do organised cycle trips of Tiede, supplying bike and transport up etc, I'll try and find a link to it, but I didn't fancy being hearded around in a bunch so first time I done it on my own bike when I lived out there then more recently we just hired bikes when on holiday...

The local bus takes you to the cable car base, if you go up that far coming down the first few kilometres are flat then you hit a 7 kilometre steep climb, both times I've ended up pushing bike up the climb, to avoid the climb ask the bus driver to let you off at the picknick area, it's all down hill from there you don't even need pedals...
