The rockery area of Sharon's garden has become overrun by these things, they are 6 to 8 inches high, they just come straight out the ground individually, they do not seem to be attached to the green leafy things around them, if you bump them a mist of dusty material falls from the head,,, anybody got a clue what they are and should we get rid somehow...

Don't know what they are called but the last time I saw those was when I was a bairn ,we used to go rat shooting down at a rubbish tip in Dalkeith ,we were always told not to go near them for some reason I'm not sure why

It seems like when you say you bump them they are releasing spores which makes me think it's some sort of fungi.

Re: One for the horticulturalist...
Been Googling,,, found it, i recognize it in its later green state, just never seen it before at its early stage, so out tomorrow cutting it down and burning as recommended on a few sites, will leave it to Sharon for the weedkiller bit, don't want blamed for killing everything...

Looks like it. I must say it was always the green parts I used to see as well. I think we called it "Mare's Tail". It's terrible stuff, if you try to pull it out it just snaps at ground level leaving the root in the ground.
