The thing is, it's usually when you are walking home and you have a few beers in you so you are in a "goodwill to all men" mood anyway. It's hard not to join in all the back-slapping, how you doing, hand-shaking, what a nice guy sort of thing. (Hill Street Blues..."Be careful out there".)
