surely it would make more sense to have the test carried out 48 hrs before departure

None of it makes sence, I get a text from doctors saying make an appointment for your regular check up, so I make an appointment, two hours pre appointment I get a text from doctors asking if I've had any Coronavirus symptoms, I answer yes to one of the questions, straight away I get a phone call from docs receptionist, I've got to have a covid test before doctor will see me, so about a month ago Wednesday at 3:30 I tested negative for virus, then I get a new doctors appointment for about two weeks later,,, I'd been in umpteeen pubs in that two weeks I could have anything by the time I saw the doc,,, what a load of feckin bollocks...
