Since Dublin Dave’s (pub landlords) birthday at beginning of March, it’s just been one big night after another in the local, and if it shut early we just moved on to anywhere that would serve drink. Midnight 16 in to 17 March (Paddy’s Day), it was like new year, the minute it was twelve Dave started, Irish music on the juke box, round of drinks for all, plus he transformed himself in to a leprechaun Guinness hat, T-shirt, Irish flag wrapped around him doing his Riverdance impersonation around the pub, (he’d had a bit to drink), anyway it ended up a bit of an early night, half twoish. I was not too much bothered as I had an early start next day, a friend had contacted me a week or so back saying his local had organised a blokes only day out for Paddy’s Day, they were doing the Penning Real Ale Trail, I had not heard of this, and being a lager drinker was not too sure about it, mate then explained that you get on the local train through the Pennine’s which stops at various small towns/villages on the way and you get off rattle in as many beers as you can in the local pubs then catch the next train to the next village, and do the same again etc, etc. There were about thirty of us, we started oneish, being Paddy’s Day we were not the only ones with same thought, the trains and pubs were mobbed, but landlords had obviously expected it and staffed up so getting served was no problem, we were also by chance lucky enough to be travelling with a bunch of guys with accordions and mandolin who were doing same pub crawl, so we had inbuilt entertainment on in most of the pubs and trains we drank and travelled on, we successfully sampled a lot of beer. But I had a dilemma, Dublin Dave was organising a do in the local, he had tried to get a live band but they were booked out, so he had a DJ who was going to play appropriate music, Irish stew etc was also being provided, I caught a train which got me back to the local tenish, walked in the pub, it was lively, Dave still looking like a leprechaun, but now with face panted as per Irish flag was rat arsed, first beer was free, he then informed me he had chucked the job, I thought he was kidding but barmaid confirmed, he had told the owner earlier in the day where to stick it, he was sick same as his predispose had been with the tying nature of the job, being an hotel he had to be there every night/morning etc . I thought next day in sobriety he would probably try to make amends, but no, he seemingly got up packed his bags and left... I got on ok with the guy and like his predecessor he was very flexible with closing times. Suppose all we can hope is his replacement has the same understanding as to customer needs, and if she’s a leggy blond nymphomaniac with all the right accessories up top who can play pool, even better...
News report ref Ale Trail, not good reading, it only takes a few to spoil it for the rest, yes on Saturday all on trains and in pubs had a drink in them, but were in good spirit...
