I think I read somewhere that the Council is going to change the name of the street dedicated to him in Los Cristianos.
About time in my opinion,a hardened ally of Hitler who only kept power after the war because of his repressive anti-Communism,which the yanks thought was helpful.

I have no problem with the street name, but my mate Jack sums it up nicely for me in this article - we can´t afford to forget the past Franco’s Legacy in Tenerife is Disappearing

I have a problem with it.
What about a street named Calle Hitler, most people would have a problem with that.
He was an ardent Nazi who sent volunteer battallions to fight against the allies in WW2,his memory has nothing to offer but memories of murder, repression and dictatorship.
Anybody, imo, who took down an elected democratic government through murder and repression should be banished to the dustbin of history.
Aushwitz and places like it should be kept to remember the evils of Fascism but these street names are gloryifing Fascism which Franco was a willing participant in.

I think we are saying the same thing CC, I have no problem getting rid of a street name, especially in Tenerife because the are rarely used, but to try and change history by deleting all reference to it is wrong. We should remember what has gone in the past and hopefully learn from it and not repeat.

Valley of the Fallen - That is a fabulous place - I was talking to CC about it just this week, it is really mind blowing. It was intended to commemorate all those who died on both sides during the Spanish Civil War and approx 40,000 soldiers both Nationalist and Republican are buried there. So IMO it should definitely stay, but Franco's remains could be moved to bottom of garden and left unmarked !!

I can't see Franco's body being moved.
The Valley of the Fallen was originally a Francoist shrine for the victorious Nazis, but he changed it to all victims while courting the EC.
A lot of families from the Republican side, backed by several left wing parties, want their loved ones bodies back as they say graveyards were emptied to fill it, thus enabling the fallacy that it was a memorial for all...here is a link about the families fight to get the bodies back.

You probaly would offend those who like to read the bible in English without the hassle of being put to death for it.

My dad went in the George and Dragon in a village on the way home from work once. We had been working with my BRO and all had muddy boots. Landlady, sour faced woman, said, you can't come in here with those muddy boots on.CaribeCelt wrote:

It is one of the many hilarious memories I have of my Dad, Cam. A man you could never insult, because he would turn it around and make you look silly.

Apologies for dragging this old thread up but we are about to vote on the name change to Calle Gen Franco.
To Airbrush Or Not To Airbrush IMO the only one that seems appropriate is The street of Merchants (If that is what it means?)
