Due to the austerity measures, we are having trouble with the ferries. The company Naviera Armas, refused to load the lorries and commercial vehicles bound for El Hierro from the port of Los Cristianos.
When the ferry arrived some four and a half hours later, a welcome committee consisting of politicians, business people and just ordinary Herreños, blockaded the unloading ramp for almost two hours. The ferry then sailed for Los Cristianos via La Gomera. Unfortunately the ferry had to radio ahead to report that they had 16 stowaways, they had inadvertently sailed with the islands politicians, who had refused to disembark prior to departing still on board.
The Guardia Civil told the politicians to purchase a ticket, but Armas refused to sell them tickets.
On arrival in Los Cristianos, Tenerife, the abandoned lorries, with the assistance of the islands politicians, blockaded the loading ramp, preventing the ferry leaving for La Gomera.
Naviera Armas are now refusing to sail to the island ever again. Fred Olsen the other ferry company, quickly jumped in and put on a special sailing.
