Would you give information away?

As some of you know we were advised to join a couple of forums a few weeks ago. Being a good girl I did that and look in from time to time but rarely post anything. Not really my scene. But today I noticed a post were someone was asking where they could find a particular person.

The answers came rolling in, she is here in this town in this location and has been for a few weeks. The reply came, thanks I can now track her down.

Now being the cynical so and so that I am, I wondered how many people think about what they are saying to strangers.

The OP never said why they wanted this woman, just they wanted to find her. What if it was a husband who she had spent years trying to get away from. What if it was the police trying to find a criminal, what if it was a hit man with a price on her head. The people just assumed the searcher was a friend. Is it me am I too paranoid or would you give information to strangers.

Crikey, the wise thing to do would be to contact the person they were lookin for and warn them, or ask for the persons details that was doing the searching and tell them you would pass them on if you see them. Cant believe someone just gave up info like that.

Well two sensible answers out of 7 so I suppose that's a start.

Yes Daryn I would do as you say, get the details and pass them on then it is up to the person whether they want to be found or not.

I also would be very careful giving info out.

Well IMO it just gets worse.

This lady is spending all her time in a Spanish hospital looking after her husband, so her home is empty and has been for the past few weeks. So supposing the OP is genuine what about others that know the woman and in these hard up times feel well we will have a look around her house because we know there is nobody going to be there

Just adopt my attitude to the Interweb.

Keep a VERY, VERY LOW profile and tell people nowt.

Don't subscribe to ANY "social networking" sites and keep checking the search engines for your name, address, phone number etc. to see if what turns up.

Don't forget that anything posted on the Interweb is there forever (even if you think you've deleted it).

Absolutely right - we should all be careful when giving out information. Safety first and all that.

If someone's details are freely available all over the web through advertising etc... then I have no problems handing out that. If you don't want your phone number giving out, then don't stick it on the full page spread in the local newspaper!

I have no issues with people giving out my mobile number or one of my many email addresses as they are public, and used primarily for business... but my landline, hubby's mobile, and our address are not banded about. Of course all of that can be found if someone really wants to - but we don't make it too easy. I work at creating a public online profile for myself and also clients too... and people are often shocked when they see what can be found out about them! By the way, no I am not the sportswoman, or the author (yet).
