Sa Pobla, a farming village of some 12,500 inhabitants near Alcúdia on Mallorca, has voted to ban the full face veil at a council meeting on Monday night. The move was approved with the votes of the governing Partido Popular and the independent councillors and will become part of the local by-laws within a month following publication in the regional state bulletin.
The restriction will be applied in all public spaces as a ban on the full face veil, ski masks, full face crash helmets and other coverings and accessories which prevent identification and visual communication.
EFE reports that the by-law aims to promote public safety and defend the dignity of women. Failure to comply with the restrictions could mean fines of up to 200 €, or as much as 3,000 € for those who repeatedly ignore the ban.
The news agency indicates that 25% of the local population are immigrants.
Sa Pobla is the first municipality on Baleares to have approved such a move
