Drivers in Tenerife are in for a shock today after the Cabildo invoked a legislative decree allowing them to impose a levy on fuel.
The decree came into force as far back as July 1994 and allows each insular administration to set its own rate, allowing for up to two cents a litre increase in tax on both petrol and diesel.
Not surprisingly, perhaps, the Tenerife Cabildo has imposed the maximum level allowed, adding two cents to a litre of fuel from midnight last night.
President of the Tenerife Transport Federation (Fetrante), John Garaboto said he was shocked at the unexpected rise saying that while the increase will hurt all motorists, his members, already suffering as a result of the economic downturn, would be particularly hit.
A spokesman for the Cabildo said the proceeds from the increase would be spent on the repair and conservation of the island’s road network.
