In a shock development, this year’s Tamaimo Hill Climb is in doubt due to a lack of funding.
The organisers have been left with little room for manoeuvre with the start of the event, now in its 38th year, less than a month away.
The problem arose after the main sponsors of the event for a number of years, COANSA, the official Seat Dealers in the islands, decided to withdraw their support.
The company issued a statement which reads: (Translated from the Spanish with cultural equivalents)
Dear friends and fans of motorsport in Tenerife, The reason for this statement is due to our withdrawal as sponsors of the Tamaimo Hill Climb, an event that we have been involved in for the last five years.
For us, our sponsorship has always been seen as a gift to the fans. However, recently we have become very concerned at our treatment at the hands of certain personalities and member of the organisers of the event.
For us it was a difficult decision to reach, especially with our track history of unmatched support for motorsport stretching back 43 years. But following the treatment we have received we feel we have no choice.
Our current president, Francisco Morales, does not want to go into more detail of the affair, believing that the details should remain a private matter between us and the organisers of the event.
However, COANSA wishes to confirm that it will continue its support for various other, similar events in Tenerife and again would like to take this opportunity to apologise to all motorsport fans for this decision.
We believe this decision was forced upon us by organisations that couldn’t care less about motorsport and which have shown a total lack of respect
