Perfectly safe Reg, if they didnt do that the mast would break. The further over they go the more the wind spills from the sails so they can only go so far, and the big heavy keel on the bottom ensures they they come upright again. Simple physics. Much more stable than a motor boat.

They are racing boats, made as light as possible so they go fast, like fomula 1 cars. Cruising yachts are perfectly safe unless they run aground or hit something.

A wayfarer dinghy would be quicker than mine Cam. 4 knots would be the best I could expect out of mine in a 20mph wind. Can easy end up going backwards in a strong current too. Engine will push about 6 knots though, but thats cheating, and costs.
