The Canarian government has now paid ferry companies
Naviera Armas and Fred Olsen a total of eight million six hundred and
seventy six thousand euros, as compensation for providing obligatory
public services, on routes where they need public subsidies in order to
be able to offer adequate services to the public, and residents
discounts. This came out of last year’s budget. The government has
allowed for over thirty three and a half million euros for the same
concept in this year’s budget, plus the outstanding amount for last
year."...
Edit: Remember there are really only 7 Islands involved in the Canarys, Scotland has scores of inhabited Islands.
