Computer Police Fine Scam
I’ve now been hit with this twice, the first time was a few month back when the “Fine” said I had been viewing child porn, and a couple of nights back when the “Fine” said I had been downloading illegal music, neither of which I was doing...
My computer screen was taken over by an image much as in the example below, the image displayed my computer IP number, my computers name and my security system details (Norton). You are asked to pay a £100 fine on line and told your computer has been locked until you do so, straight away I knew it was a scam, one giveaway was it explained the activities I had allegedly carried out were illegal in the “State” where I lived !!!
When the image appears I lost control of my computer, pressing keys did nothing, I did not try completing the payment part of the form. Eventually I pressed “Control, Alt, Delete”, this shut down my computer, on restarting all looked fine, but a couple of seconds after my “Desktop” appeared the screen turned grey and my keypad was inactive, again I pressed “Control, Alt, Delete”, the grey screen changed to what I would call my “Opening Page” where you are give options to change your password, change user, log out etc, I went through these options but none unlocked my computer, just took me back to a grey screen.
When I pressed the log out button the computer would shut down and then automatically go through its start up procedure, but as said as soon as my desktop appeared the screen a couple of seconds later would turn grey and keypad would disable.
I kept going through the log out procedure and within the couple of seconds that my desktop appeared tried quickly to kick on a program to open, you would see the program start to open then the screen would say shutting down, and give you the option to continue shut down or cancel, I would try to click on the cancel button, but you only get a few seconds to do this and if you are not quick enough the screen turns grey and the computer locks.
After numerous attempts I managed to click a program and cancel button before the computer locked and the computer worked as normal. I then ran CCleaner, I did not have Malwarebytes downloaded at the time, after running CCleaner I shut the computer down, it did not rectify the problem, after further attempts I managed to skip the virus and got the computer working again, this time I done a system recovery to a previous date, this fixed the problem.
Then as said I was hit again with the virus a couple of nights back, after going through the tedious log out/on procedure numerous times I manages to skip the virus and got the computer working, this time I done a system recovery straight away, “it did not rectify problem”, once gaining access to the computer I ran Malwarebyte, this fixed the problem.
Has anyone else experienced this virus, or know of any way of protecting against it, as I said earlier I have Norton security on the computer but this did not protect it, the virus is known about as there is plenty on the net about it, just type in “Computer Police Fine Scam”.
