Incredible as this may seem, nothing surprises me anymore in this wacky country, a Norwegian company has been paid £1.2 m to shut down their wind farm in the Scottish borders for about 8 hours. This was because of the winds generated by the tail-end of hurricane Katia and would have overloaded the grid system. Incredibly they were paid 10 times more to switch off than they would have received from actually generating electricity.

I use no more than i need to, what pisses me off is all we want is cheap energy, not fancy tariffs that we don't understand, or to take a gamble on a long term fixed price, not energy company's spending a fortune on advertising, it's not a life choice to use energy, it's an essential, and to then tax us to be green,,, just provide us with affordability energy you robbing bas#ards...
They were on about energy prices on Question Time a couple of weeks back, was obvious politicians involved were in someone's pocket, no balls to say or do anything about it, one kept on going on about us needing more choice than just the " big six",,, No we don't you twat, we just want cheaper affordable energy...

Those turbines are meant to have an automatic shut off point when the wind speed is too great ( at least over here). Love to see how much the repair bill would be had they left them running in the middle of a storm.

The Solar and wind farms at Arico here are amazing. What gets me is, greatest force of all is never used, the sea. All those friggin waves, must be able to generate from them. Why also do we need competition, nationalise the industry, again but have an Independant regulator. Like Adam says, price drop immediately as millions saved in advertising.

Extract from an article on Albania:-
"Albania and Croatia have discussed the possibility of jointly building a nuclear power plant at Lake Shkoder, close to the border with Montenegro, a plan that has gathered criticism from Montenegro due to seismicity in the area. In addition, there is some doubt whether Albania would be able to finance a project of such a scale with a total national budget of less than $5 billion. However, in February 2009 Italian company Enel announced plans to build an 800 MW coal-fired power plant in Albania, to diversify electricity sources. Nearly 100% of the electricity is generated by ageing hydroelectric power plants, which are becoming more ineffective due to increasing droughts."
