Staff at the breeding centre for the critically endangered Giant lizard of La Gomera are celebrating today after the birth of 112 baby lizards.
The breeding programme at the centre, in Valle Gran Rey, is going from strength to strength, with this year’s total far outstripping previous efforts, up from just eight in 2009 and 37 last year.
A spokesperson said all the new-borns appear fit and healthy and said their addition brings the total number of lizards at the centre to 267.
If the breeding programme continues to be a success, experts believe they could soon achieve their aim of re-introducing the rare and unique animals, considered one of the most endangered species in the world, back into the wild.
