Traffic sitting going nowhere, where with the use of the hard shoulder a couple of lanes could be open in each direction, I'll bet before plod arrived the traffic was still flowing...
In this case the driver was seriously injured, no deaths, I accept there will be cases for the need of accident investigation, vehicle recovery, carriageway repair etc there will be the need for closure, but where possible this should be timed to cause as little disruption as possible, but to me it often just seems totally unnecessary for the closures. Even if the motorway was to be closed at the junction prior to the accident diverting traffic off, and where possible via the use of the hard shoulder free the traffic held up immediately behind the accident, but no, over 70% of plod etc there just seem to stand around doing nothing. I have personally sat twice for four hours in such instances, and also know of two people held for seven and nine hours in such cases, the one held for nine hours was on the M60 Manchester ring road, a chemical tanker was involved in an accident and it was deemed to dangerous to let traffic pass it, there were motorway slip roads approx a mile either side of the incident, why not turn the trapped traffic around on the carriageway and feed it off at the previous junction, but no, the cops just left people sitting there for nine hours, do they get some kick out of it...
