On the subject of gyros, my mate John served his time as a mechanic, he had been with the same company for about fifteen years since leaving school and was feeling in a bit of a rut...
One night in the pub he announces, "I've got a new job", he'd got a job in a big factory walking distance from his house, so no commuting in to town, he was going to be working in a clean dust free temperature controlled environment compared to the dirty cold garage he had been used to, plus a much improved wage packet, the job, assembling gyroscopes for fighter plane guidance systems.
There was a lot of training involved for the job and he had been assigned to watch and learn from a guy who had been doing the job for years, he told us as how the guy would constantly remind him as he watched him assemble the gyroscopes of the cost of each component stating "these things cost hundreds of thousands you've got to be careful"...
Some weeks passed and I bumped in to John again, I ask him how's things going with the new job, he replies "I'm back on the tools again" meaning he's back working in a garage, I ask him what went wrong with what seemed like the perfect job, he explained...
After spending weeks watching the guy assemble the gyroscopes eventually came the day he was to have a go, he explained that the body of the gyro was positioned on a tripod like stand which allowed it to be moved in to various positions to aid assembly, he went on, "I'm working away at it with my trainer looking over my shoulder constantly reminding me to be careful and of the costs involved, he was doing my head in, making to fit a part I accidentally knock the tripod, the whole lot crashes to the floor, I look at my trainer as he does me, the words, that cost...
