Two British women drown in Playa Paraiso

Heard and saw the helicopters earlier this evening and then tonight this appeared on JA's website.  Terrible story.

Two British women died this evening after they got into difficulty in the water at Playa Paraiso. Emergency services activated ambulances, a helicopter, police and bomberos after receiving reports at 6pm that five people were in difficulty. They arrived to find that two women and two children had already been pulled from the water by the public; a third woman was found by the helicopter and discovered to be in cardiac arrest, and paramedics tried to resuscitate her as they flew her to land.
A doctor from a local health centre also attended the scene along with another doctor there by chance, but despite their efforts, they could do no more than confirm the death at the scene of the woman rescued by helicopter and one of the two rescued by the public. The two fatalities were 40 and 43 years old; the third woman was 38 years old; she, together with a 10-year-old child, was transferred to Hospiten Sur where they are said not to be seriously ill. A 14-year-old child was treated at the scene for minor injuries. No doubt there will be further details in due course.

Yes, people forget about currents. I have no knowledge of them in Tenerife but local ones to me can often run at 2 to 3 knots. Not many people can swim that fast.

When I lived out there was down fishing at the old pier which was part of the banana plantation near the Costa Mar, water levels a good eight feet below pier level, next thing a wave from nowhere, I'm soaked to the waist, fishing gear and six tins of Dorada gone...

Another time up at Del Duque beach the waves were comming in big in to the corner where the mansion is on the rock, the combination of the waves and the back wash made the sea very choppy, loads of people were in the midst of it enjoying the thrill of being tossed around like a cork, I joined in, consider my self a reasonable swimmer, swam for the school team in my youth, a wave caught me, rolled me up the beach like a peice of flotsam, then back out to sea as it receded, half drowned I decided I'd had enough, could I get out,,, no, as I tried to get on to the beach the backwash from the cliff just washed me back out, ended up swiming back out fron the cliff/beach and about a hundred or so yards away from the corner before I managed to get back on shore, and I considered myself a reasonable swimmer, not that day, was knackered by the time I made the beach............

i was told its because there is no´´shelf´´ between the islands ,and that it just gets deeper and deeper as soon as you leave the shore ,so massive underground currents just roll up to the beach ...the main tourist beachs have been made with a gentle slide and hen a breakwater ,sometimes a habour wall ... teresitas is a very safe beach but what is amazing is that within meters of the breakwater fully ladden oil tankers wizz past ,showing how deep it close to shore ..
