Canarian families quids in
FAMILIES in the Canary Islands spent an average of 600 euros on electricity and other fuels in 2013, representing 3.5% of the average household expenditure in that year.
And, remarkably, the Canaries is one of the regions having the lowest effect on the family budget.
On average Spanish families spent 1,100 euros a year, which is 4,9% of family costs in 2013.
According to a study, this sum paid out for energy in the home last year was 4% lower than in 2012, although the bill was up 6% from 2010.
The average household expenditure on gas in 2013 was below 250 euros, 1.8% less than in the previous year. And contrary to what happens with electricity, the average expenditure on gas fell by 8.4% compared with 2010.
But while the Spanish average fell by almost 4%, there were nine provinces which showed an upward trend. And seven of them belong to Castilla and León. Only Palencia and Leon escaped an increase on household energy.
However, Soria households suffered the biggest rise, with 10% (about 135 euros), reaching 1,480 euros per year per family.
Energy bills are cheaper in the Canary Islands because the tax is considerably lower and, of course, there is a lower demand for heating.
