It's from the original Gaelic. Strath is a vide valley and Avon or Aven is from the Gaelic word "Abhainn" meaning River, so basically it means valley with a river. By the way, all those river Avons you have down South, it's the same root word Abhainn, so you lot are calling those water courses River river!
