Re: Childhood poverty
Our bath night was a Saturday 'cos mum made us all go to church and then bible class on Sundays. We used to get a bolt thruppenny bit to put in the collection plate but more often than not we'd pretend to put it in and keep it. There were 5 of us, that was a lot of money in them days, bloody church wasn't getting it.

I remember the soap, A bar lasted 14 months in our house, 4 lads, ma and pa, Then when it got too small to hold, It was put with the other bits, until you could use it, Dad dropped one on his foot, They had to amputate it, Took two to carry it home From the co,op, Front page news when you got a new bar, Peasants peeping thriugh the window to see ( TheFull Bar),

Yeah, that was where the hand pump was for pumping the drinking water from the well.

Collection plate ?, I think i would be practicing putting 1 in and taking 3 out, If them churches are so smart, And the big man is watching over his flock, What the Feck do they need to do that for ?, And do you really think the priest isnt skimming it to buy the drink, Piss heads and peddlars of doom and gloom,

Yeah, there was only one bedroom, mum and dad's bed was in the living room. Eldest brother went to live with my gran and papa to make more room. He lives in Ripon now, been there since the 70s.when he left the army.
That house we lived in was the pits. It was built in 1824 for feck's sake, no running hot water, no electric, no gas. Heating was the open fire, we had a fire in the bedroom but that was never lit as we couldn't afford the coal for two fires.
I left that dosshouse in 1967, 12 years of my life in there, it's all demolished now of course and new modern houses built on the site.

True enough Reg, I look back and think how the hell did we live like that. When I see what I have now compared to then it's like night and day. Satellite Tv, fridge, automatic washing machine, freezer, microwave et al, luxury now pal.

My mum's house had the first concrete floor in the town! Practically all the other families came in to see this amazing thing.
