Problem with Freds car. Its a 01 Fabia SDI. As soon as you engage 1st gear, 3rd gear or reverse the engine stops. Even when driving along. Also noticed that when the engine stops when this occurs the rev counter judders down to zero instead of the normal way it goes to zero. Obviously an electrical issue of some sort. Tried tinternet with no success. Any ideas? A car with 2 gears is better than no car at all I say but he dont like.

Re: Question for Reg
Any lights on the dash like engine management ? could be an ECU problem if yes,
you will have looked to see any wires near gear linkage touching,

Re: Question for Reg
Yip, sounds like gear linkage interfering with wiring somewhere...

Re: Question for Reg
I think the wires might be touching the gear linkage thingy...

Re: Question for Reg
Freds had that to bits already, I told him to leave it alone. He tends to feck things totally rather than fix them. I am thinking ECU. Pic of book with an exclamation mark comes up on dash.

Re: Question for Reg
You can ignore women though, and still get a ride.
Spent two hours this morning trying to open the bonnet on new Panda, well its a Panda hybrid really, SEAT Terra Vista. Adapted for wheelchair use but that bit will get binned. Having got the bonnet open I see its got a servo. Woo. Petrol going in carb and spark at distributor, tested the manual method, but I'm not getting a jolt from plug leads so I have ordered a new condensor and points. Not been on road since 2008, 43,000 miles and £200. I have plans to turn it into a Snatch Vehicle. Muslim patrol.

Re: Question for Reg
Found the problem. Turns out the main cable that goes from the battery to the starter motor solenoid was fouling on the gear selector on the gearbox. Surprised it didnt catch fire as there are no fuses protecting that particular cable. Had similar happen on a boat on the River Medway (not one of mine) and that DID catch fire. Just been raining so I will sort it later. Fred owes some of you chaps a beer, i'll get feck all of course. Cheers.
