£1.6 billion has been spent by Nasa’s to find evidence of life on Mars. The 'rover' will blast off tomorrow.

But is it worth spending that sort of money to find out what is happening in outer space when there is so much poverty and illness in our own world?

And being serious, I can never understand the amount of money spent on project such as these, then governments claim poverty and rely on charities for much more basic needs as you mention.

I think we are a very curious species. Its in our genetic make up to explore. There are more than enough resources worldwide available to eliminate poverty but the political will isnt there and it also suits some regimes to keep the general population in the gutter
as they are easier to control. Pol Pot didn't send everyone to work in
the killing fields for no good reason.Maybe more importantly, the upper classes will give a few quid to charity cos that makes them feel they have done their bit and can sleep easier. I think the statistic is 90% of the worlds wealth is held by 5% of the people?? I mean wtf??
