My dad was torpedoed in the Forth estuary where they were forming a convoy, and somewhere in the Atlantic, again in a convoy, the one in the Atlantic they knew they were gonna get hit, some sort of unwritten code, sub was hitting every second ship in convoy so crew were ready to jump ship...
Never understood the convoy theory, like shooting ducks in a row at a fairground stall innit...
But away from above, dads on boat going up the Tyne for wartime damage repair, boats got to be pumped light of ballast to go over a boom at mouth of Tyne, wind hits side of boat and it falls over (very slowly), crew just walked up deck then on to side of ship as it fell over...
