Looking at the damage on both ships it looks like the container ship steamed into the navy ship bow first...

And there were seven on the deck of the US ship why,,, squished to death me thinks sitting at cumputer desks, plus bulbous nose of container ship must have done lot of damage to warship, but looking at photos more 45% degree angle of impact..l

That's exactly what happened to them. They've been found in the crushed part of the ship and are being taken to Japan to be identified...BBC News

Bit from the BBC article, sounds like bulbous nose of container ship ripped in to hull as I suspected:-
"The damage was significant," 7th Fleet commander Vice-Admiral Joseph P Aucoin said. "There was a big gash under the water."
