The wording "A brawl had started" makes me think they were involved in some way not innocent bystanders, may be wrong...

Apparently some guy tried to rob them and stabbed them, they thought it was a brawl because lots of passers by jumped in to help so looked like a fight from a distance. Both really badly hurt tho. esp. the one who was stabbed in the stomach.
