They are the safest form of travel Mermaid. These days so much in place, no one would have been killed if it wasn't for desperation. That is a problem, panic. The lifeboats on one side could possibly hold all the passengers and if people think about it the harbour is probably not deep enough to take that size ship down. Ships take days now to completely sink so best option get high.

    Cruise Ship-6 dead Lagik211

This is a picture of the 'Lagik' which ran aground while manouvering at Port Sutton Bridge in 2000. It is just downstream from where my yacht is berthed. When the tide went out the vessel broke in three and blocked the river for weeks. The Pilot and Captain were apparently arguing at the time. Even professionals get it wrong sometimes...........

Cruise Ship-6 dead _57899190_013715507-1 Look how close to shore that Liner is. That can't possibly be legal. A ship that size must have to stay a required distance away from land I would have thought.

Crew like passengers, sliding down the deckheads and bulkheads.
They spoke today about people being trapped with the cabin door on the ceiling, what about the ones on inside port side cabins, their doors will be on the deck, submerged. It must be inside cabins where they will find the dead ones.

    Costa Concordia/Captain Schettino

When this story first broke, I initially had some sympathy with the captain if his version of events turned out to be proven correct, in his claim the charts showed no rocks and that it was not the first time he had sailed such a course.

If his action after the event are proven! well that’s a different issue.

But keeping to his original claim that the rocks he hit were not charted, which I have since read Lloyds confirmed they did not show on UK charts, is he at fault for the accident....

OK, it will be said he was off course, but this was seemingly not unusual and had been accepted in the past.

I frequently travelled a UK ferry route, during the winter months the ferry kept well away from the coastline, but during the summer months the ship hugged the coastline to give the tourists a more scenic journey...

So I ask again, excluding Captain Schettino actions following the event, is he guilty if the charts showed no obstacles....
