Easier to find work in the south of the island if you don´t have Spanish. The north would be a lot harder. But any work will be difficult to come by, the Canary Islands have the highest unemployment rate in Spain at about 30%.
I would be amazed if your OH found any admin work other than selling timeshare/holiday clubs on the phone which only seem to last a few weeks. You will probably find it easier to work but again your position will depend on the footfall in the restaurant/hotel rather than how good a chef you are.
If you do find work you will probably be offered cash in hand, no contract, no social payment and when they ask you to leave at the end of 2 - 3 months no paro (dole). Sorry to paint such a black picture but if you are determined to come and live here you should be aware of what it is really like, and that is nothing like being on holiday. I would not recommend anyone coming to live here at this point in time if they have to rely on working to make a living. For those who can retire here it is ideal but otherwise very very hard.
and now feel a real shit because I have spoilt their dreams. They have just said maybe my wife and I should have a rethink, no harm in dreaming though.
BRAVO Gypsy - you deserve a medal for saving this couple of sad dreamers.
If only there had been people like you around years ago to warn similar mugs, there wouldn't have been some many people returning to the UK skint to sponge off the good old taxpayer.
I applaud you.

Suppose it depends on what your used to, speaking to the couple they were obviously holding their heads above water in the UK, but their dream abroad had become an existence, they admitted they were going under, the profits were just covering the bar overheads and no more and that was in the height of the season, they were savvy enough to realise come the winter they had problems....
The girl was in tears talking about it and the guy was not much better.
Their life was stacked on the shelf’s under the small bar in one corner and in a suitcase stored in the toilet in the other for all to see, it was their house ! Where they washed ??? Beach showers !!!
Some dream...
But yes if you’re in a worse position, I accept it could be your dream.
Highlight of the day, blowing up the air bed and getting a few hours sleep !!!

Re: Reality Bites and I feel soooo bad.
Life is all about winners and losers, of course you feel for them. Its not just Tenerife. There is just one pub in my village owned by a brewery, dont go there personally, if you front up 15k you can rent it. Most people last about 18 months. Brewery dont give a shit. There is always the next dreamer on the horizon. Tenerife is exactly the same, put some dosh up and pay rent. Might just as well buy 15,000 lottery tickets, odds are about the same.
