Re: Tourist Sub Sinks, 3 dead
A few years back I was taking a walk around the Golf de Sur marina, one of these yellow subs was moored there, don’t know if it operated from there but it was going through some sort of refit.
Being engineering minded and having an interest in boats and anything mechanical I stopped to view the work in progress.
The lads working on the sub, and I mean lads (kids) had several panels removed from the subs hull and deck exposing the valves, pipework, ballast tanks etc, which made the sub function.
Having nothing better to do I watched them at work for a period of time, given what I observed I would not have set sail on the vessel never mind above the waves or even less below.... Talk about Mickey Mouse engineering..............
I accept today’s incident may be down to human error given sub collided with a reef, and can only say I feel for those involved.
(This the one 3rd/Mcqueen?)

On the same note (possible engineering failure).
Lying on Las Vistas beach one day at the Los Cris end, speed boat towing parasail goes by, just as it passed the breakwater the tow line to the parachute broke, the parachute was rigged for two people, it dropped like a stone with those on board hitting the water at considerable speed, if they had come down 30 yards closer to the shore they would have landed on the breakwater, dead....
I have parasailed, once, can only describe it as flying without an aeroplane, decided when I fly I want the trolley dolly, the alcohol, the in-flight entertainment, and most importantly the toilets, could have done with them on the day in question.....

Re: Tourist Sub Sinks, 3 dead
The one in the marina at Golf del Sur is very much functional at the moment (saw it going out a couple of weeks back). Basically it just goes the other side of the breakwater at the entrance to the harbour. Punters see fish swimming about and diver comes down and appears at the window.......Effing marvelous, I would pay at least 5€ for that, suspect they may be paying considerably more. All Germans were they? U-boats come to mind........

Re: Tourist Sub Sinks, 3 dead
Kid was nine...
Could have been with parents or grandparents given ages of others involved in tragic incident.
My father was torpedoed twice during the war, it was not his choice to be there.....
He very rarely spoke about the war, same as other family members, including one who was also torpedoed and watched a dozen or so shipmates die in the lifeboat before he and one other survivor were rescued.
My father remained at sea the rest of his working days, on visiting him one day he asked to be taken to the local docks, he was in his eighties at the time, there were a couple of German U-boats in the harbour which were having an open day.
We went on board, once on board he struggled with the vertical ladders but was determined see around the sub, he explained politely to the crew his war time experiences, much of which went over their heads as they were mainly kids just doing a job, but it was clear to me for his wish to be there, he needed to see what had caused him such anguish.
His words on leaving the vessel, pity anyone who was stuck in one of those things during the war.
He felt for others...
I accept I am being a bit hypocritical posting this one as I have made light of the Italian cruise liner incident.
We all see things different, that’s why we have wars.................

Thank you for that Adam, we tend to forget what our parents went through and now and again something unrelated can trigger a thought.
