Another feckin bill
The Heater in Eileens car is beginning to act up. Sometimes works, sometimes not. Peugeot dealership here want 1400 euro plus vat to change the heater box. If we pay that, thats the end of our trip to Tenerife . I've spent all weekend trying to come up with something cheaper

Coat and socks for now. Weather warming up and winter soon out, worry about it later in the year.

Wood burning stove, Place a tin tray in the passenger foot well, Stand the stove on top, Secure it to any thing you can find, Dont ues string, It sets on fire, Keep it lit at all times, Just shut it down on a night time, In the morning you will have the only car in the neighbourhood with no frost on it, Easy to control, If it gets too warm open a window, Best of all its cheap to run, Save your money for your holidays, You heard it here first folks, Its the future,

Re: Another feckin bill
Hot water bottles...
Had a fibreglass car once, leaked water in like a sieve, plus had a crap heater.
Spent god knows how many weekends trying to rectify water ingress, could not, eventually came up with solution, drilled a few holes in the floor to let the water out.
Only problem was carpets would still retain water and in the winter with the condensation in the car it would mean there was usually more ice on the inside of the windows than the outside.
Answer, three hot water bottles, two placed on the dashboard to defrost the ice on the inside of the windscreen, and the third placed on the drivers seat so warm my arse after I’d finished scrapping the ice from the outside of the windows.
Another answer, length of hose pipe, attach to exhaust pipe to feed hot gasses in to the car through a slightly open side window, can’t understand why the manufacturers have not refined this concept as they are big in to this green emission thing with their EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) etc.
But look on the bright side 3rd, at least it’s the wife’s car not yours...

Re: Another feckin bill
try flushing it through with some cleaner the matrix may just be blocked - are you sure it's not air locked ?

Re: Another feckin bill
Don't think its air locked, its working intermittently.. Leaving it up to my local mechanic this week. He'll have a look at it. The air con also has to be refilled I think. There was a "rasping" noise from it a couple of months ago ( but we don't use it over the winter)

Re: Another feckin bill
A matrix wouldnt come and go ?, So i dont think thats blocked, Is the temp reading normal ?, With the cold weather maybe it isnt getting warm enough, An air lock would cause it to be intermitent, See if there is a bleed screw up near the heater, or bleed it with undoing one of the pipes, Only same as house central heating if that gets air in, It comes and go's
Stay away from the main agents, swop the car if you cant sort it, It has been colder than normal, Run the car untill warm Then where the two heater pipes go into the car feel them, they should be the same if the heater is ok, which i think it will be, €1400 Thats mental,

Re: Another feckin bill
Thanks Reg, I'm going to leave the car up to my local mechanic and let him take a look. The dealership said the entire dash would have to come out hence the big bill.
Edit: We haven't had the cold weather here like you have had so that shouldn't be the problem

Re: Another feckin bill
Could be a sticking thermostat causing intermittent temps - as Reg says get it up to temp on the guage and then see if the heater works.

Re: Another feckin bill
Either an airlock, most likely, or water not circulating for another reason D. If its possible undo the inlet and outlet hoses, (about one inch diameter they would be) and give it a blast through with a hose. Maybe some crap in there. You will probably need new jubilee clips cos I bet they are the crimped on type. If the matrix is leaking causing an airlock you will probably have wet/damp carpet under the dashboard. Regards, Arthur 2.

Been to the boat today, cleaned all inside with sugar soap, magic stuff. Was going to paint it but looks ok now. Bit grubby on the outside but hose still frozen up. Maybe tomorrow then.

Re: Another feckin bill
Sorry 3rd, being serious, more info on symptoms would help, strange it being intermittent.
1.. How did main dealer come to conclusion complete new heater box required, did they check car out or was it a worst case quote.
2.. Is it that heat actually stops coming through the heater or is it just not being blown out at times due to an intermittent fault with the fan motor (you mention of a rasping noise from the air con could have been the fan motor on way out).
Not a fault finding tip, but always run the air con for a short period of time once a week during the winter months, leaving it idle for long periods does it no good.
It is very rare to have to replace a complete heater box, normally failed item, fan motor, matrix, control valve, etc, can be replaced individually, hopefully your local mechanic can come up with a more realistic diagnosis/price.
And the hot water bottle story was true, and given option of fixing car heater or cancelled holiday wife and kids would be choosing their favourite colours.
Good luck.

Re: Another feckin bill
Go on said holiday now, weather would have warmed up by the time you get back.
You listen to Arthur and Uncle Albert..........failing that you are self employed get the missus a lease car and claim it back on the firm.
Always have a firm for these purposes.

Re: Another feckin bill
My heater was playing up, but it was just the fan that was intermittant. I put new brushes in and that seems to have done the trick.

Quote was worse case scenario but looking at a minimum of 400 anyway.
Its not the fan, blows cold air.
With regards to the hot water bottle, brilliant!
