Two men of Sub-Saharan extraction, one from Sierra Leona and the other from Senegal were killed in a freak car accident yesterday morning.
According to eye-witnesses at the Puerto de la Luz fishing harbour in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the men were driving a small ford car along the quayside just before midday, when it suddenly sped up and shot over the edge into the sea.
The passenger opened his window and yelled for help and although divers who were nearby managed to retrieve the bodies of the occupants of the car, one was already dead and despite nearly an hour of resuscitation attempts were unable to save the second man either.
The car has been lifted out of the harbour by crane and an investigation into the causes of the accident will follow.
