Authorities in El Hierro have issued a yellow alert after detecting movement of magma some 20km deep beneath two areas of the island and land deformation of 3cm.
The alert was issued by the committee for the civil protection plan following an on-going risk assessment, which also took into account the more than 300 tremors, which hit the island on Tuesday.
Several of these had a magnitude of more than 3 on the Richter scale, according to experts at the National Geographic Institute, who expressed their own concern following events on Tuesday.
Security director general of the Canary Islands, Juan Santana said the yellow alert affected only two areas of the island, stressing that there was no risk to the population at this time.
