Not quite Tenerife but pretty close so I have put this in here. We have been hearing a lot about volcanic eruptions on El Hierro since July but this weekend in order to calm the rumours of a possible tsunami The Canary Islands government has set the 'yellow alert' which means the population will be kept up to date on the practical aspects of the action plan including meeting points, shelters and evacuation plans.

This is an interesting article in News in the Sun

Rumblings Over El Hierro - by Peter Jay

It is interesting to read ‘letters to the editor’ in the press and comments on community message boards bemoaning the coverage being given to the earthquake swarm in El Hierro.

Typically it runs something like: “Oh here we go again, scaremongering by the media, anything for a story, really bad for tourism.”

Well, sensationalism aside, it is the job of the media to report what is happening and surely you have to agree, 400 tremors in one day is worthy of a mention.

    Yellow Alert

Any tremor above 2.6 on the Richter scale (and the island was shaken by two tremors measuring more than 3 over the weekend), makes it mandatory, under United Nations protocol, to issue a yellow alert.

A yellow alert simply means that plans are put into place to ensure the safety of the islanders in the event of an eruption and to keep them informed.

    It doesn’t signal Armageddon.
It does not mean that an eruption is imminent. In fact the chances of an eruption are put at around 10 per cent.
According to the experts, in the unlikely event that such an eruption occurred, it would be a fairly minor affair.
The island is not going to suffer a massive eruption with the top of the island being blown off.

    El Hierro is not Krakatoa.

With lava moving at just a couple of metres an hour, it will be slow enough for a tortoise to escape, never mind the population, (who would probably be too busy taking pictures on their iPhones to sent to their uncle in Madrid, to panic).

As for tourism, university professor and leading volcanologist, Eumenio Ancochea, believes that even a minor eruption would bring experts flocking to the island from around the world, filling hotels and other accommodation to overflowing, providing a huge boost to the tiny island’s economy.

So we can all rest easy. Nothing is going to blow up; it won’t affect the other islands and should not have a detrimental effect on tourism, although it’s understandable that people are concerned.

Incidentally, following last year’s Icelandic eruption, tourist numbers increased dramatically, although, granted, they probably weren’t looking for fun in the sun.

    Is that true?

Not really...if a tree branch falls on your car then they'll call it an act of God, but if you can prove there was a fecker up there with a saw....

This is a bit different from everything else we have been reading - not sure if it is scaremongering or what only seen it in one other place which is News in the Sun.

53 people have been evacuated from the Canary Island of El Hierro, because of increased seismic activity and the fear that a volcanic eruption is on the way.

The scientists think that the frequency and intensity of the tremors is set to increase and there have been more than 100 recorded on Tuesday alone, 79 of them between 2 and 3.8 on the Richter scale.
