Googled it: he lost the tip of his little finger when in the Merchant Navy after a prank with a bread slicing machine.

I know quite a few people with bits of fingers missing 2 are joiners, 1 mechanic, 1 lift engineer, Clumsy sods ,
One joiner thought he was clever and ran to the hospital with the finger in with some frozen peas, Quak said i can sew it back on but it will drive you mad because the nerves are damaged and it will get in the way all the time, So he just lobbed it in the bin,
