A FORMER landlord of the pub made famous in classic film Local Hero has vanished.
Father-of-two Sandy Taylor, 61, disappeared in the Atlantic Ocean after setting sail in a yacht from Lanzarote.
Sandy, from Buckie, Banffshire, moved to the Canary Islands several years ago after splitting from wife Jennifer but hasn't been seen for more than two months.
The couple ran the Pennan Inn, in the Aberdeenshire village of the same name, in the 80s. It became a major tourist attraction after the success of the 1983 Bill Forsyth movie.
The Taylors bought the inn in April 1985 but sold it a few years later.
It is understood Sandy, who suffered from arthritis, had been living on his yacht in Lanzarote. He was spotted on CCTV in a supermarket the day before he went missing.
The Foreign Office confirmed he was reported missing on Saturday, July 2. His family have travelled to the island to help police but are unwilling to comment.
Pal Sandy Dalgarno, an Aberdeen garage owner, said: "The search turned up absolutely nothing. It's just a complete mystery."
He said he last saw Sandy in March when he went over to visit him, adding: "He was in good spirits."
A source close to the probe said: "There was a feeling he had gone to ground and didn't want people to know where he was.
"From the CCTV footage, it appeared he may have been stocking up for a big trip."
