Re: A.A. boxes.
Agree, But its big business that own the things, and somebody has to paint and look after them, same as phoneboxes, who dosent have a mobile phone now ?, so pretty soon all that lot will be scrapped, sad but true,
I believe the AA has swopped owners a few times, Coincidence the building that Janet works in used to be the AA headquarters, Caretaker rang me one day, he was cutting back some bushes and found 2 belting AA signs, which are now on my garage wall, along with past loves, (Cars), The building looks like an old castle, turrets and all that,
Moorfield house Alma road Headingley Leeds, i just had a looky

Remember you used to get a key when you joined. Opened the door to the black A.A. box and you had access to maps and telephone dirctories and of course a telephone. Brilliant times. They'd be vandalised out of existence now.

One at the bottom of Garrowby hill, pass it going to Bridlington, just after Stamford Bridge, Dad used to reverse the car up the hill and we had to walk, (Lowest gear) i say car but it would be an old FX3 taxi with a million miles on it,
More than once he would strike a deal with a fare paying passenger to take us all too, £1 discount

The telephone pole in the previous picture will have an armoured cable buried from it to the A.A. box for the telephone inside.
