UK to adopt European time??
What do you think of the plan to keep the UK in line with Europe regarding winter time hours? What will Scotland do because ( i'm open to correction here) do they go darker a good bit earlier than the rest of the UK being so far north? If the UK changes, we'll have to as well. The only reason we change our clocks is so that our businesses are open the same hours as those in our biggest trading partner, the UK.

Re: UK to adopt European time??
It's the far north of Scotland who'll suffer most. It won't be dawn in mid-winter 'til about 09.30am or so. I'm at my work at 07.00am, I'm an Overhead Surveyor, I need light to see what I'm doing as I have to decide what size telegraph poles will be needed for the poling gangs. I need to see if there is any overhead power-lines in the vicinity, any water manholes in the area, gas pipelines etc. It's a big deal up here if we lose a couple of hours per man out of the working day.

Another reason for a "yes" vote in the referendum?

I wonder if they would try to change our working hours to start at 09.30am rather than 08.00 and add it on at the end of the day, so instead of a 4 o'clock finish it'll go to half five. That's a helluva life change when you've been used to finishing at 4. Dad's can be at home for the kids coming from school etc allowing the lady of the house to work as well, but that would all have to change...

So thats what you meant when you said out in the field,
I'm amazed in this day and age they still go over head, I watched a gang send a cable under a main road the other day, Blady great machine sent a tube under, then pulled a cord back, then pulled a cable over, Amazing, Gaffer was sweating even though they did a survey, He said theirs a load of tele comunications, And if he got it wrong, Goodnight vienna, said it happened in mayfair london the previous week, Major feck up, At the side of TF1 in tenerife, They put all them red and white electricity pylons, It just looks so old hat, When they build roads why dont they have tunnels at the side or underneath just for pipe work and cables, it just looks a mess, In our cul de sac they came round and took the stone kerbs, Replaced them with concrete, 2 years ago, All raised up because they were retarmacing the street, Have they been back, No, Have they dug up the pavement, Twice, Water board then Gas, So we all bang up and down the kerbs, That must be 3"at least, Madness,

Re: UK to adopt European time??
I'd dare say they would. It would make more sense if they did change the clock. I think I read that the UK wont adopt the time changes unless all the devolved governments agree. Write a letter to Alex Salmond promising a "yes" vote if he vetoes this thing.

I think the Germans and Danish have tunnels to the side of footpaths where they run pipes and cables. Cam might be able to confirm. Also, doesn't it cost about 4 times as much to put an electricity cable underground?

Re: UK to adopt European time??
There are millions of wooden poles in the UK network still Reg, you could never replace everything underground, can you imagine the upheaval just replacing one pole with 20 telephone wires on it? Each property would have to have it's own individual duct laid, trunking up the walls of terraced housing etc., pole recovered and replaced with a manhole with a distribution point inside. It would cost tens of thousands just to replace one pole with underground services with no way of getting that money back. Ain't gonna happen mate. All new builds are underground but we'll be long buried along with our kids and grandkids before you see all telephone poles gone. (If ever).
PS. It's worse in Scotland, all our poles are in the back gardens of houses as people don't want poles on the pavements in front of their living rooms, but I have to say people are starting to refuse to allow us to replace decayed poles now, saying they are not with BT anymore. Thing is if there is a Wayleave agreement then anyone who buys a property also gets the utilities with it, such as Gas, Electric, Water pipes and Telecoms. If they have bought off a local authority housing such as the Council, then the Council are deemed to have had a Wayleave payment. This is when people get stroppy and demand we take our pole out of their property and I have to apply to our legal team to get a copy of the deeds for the house concerned, take it to them and show them where it says we can maintain, repair, install services etc. Thing is, some poor sod's phone/broadband has been faulty for the 2 or 3 weeks all this palaver takes.

That's one of my pet hates up here when the Council start replacing perfectly good lamposts with new ones, digging up the pavements and putting new electric cables in. I'm sure they do it just to make sure their annual budget is used up so they don't get less money in the next financial year. Oh! and bloody 100 yards worth of kerblines in the middle of the country is another of their tricks!

I like tea Reg, dont think they grow much in Yorkshire though. Where I live all the leccy comes via wooden poles, and the telephone too, thats why I am about 2 hours late.......

Re: UK to adopt European time??
I seem to have gone off topic a bit. Purely by chance yesterday I mentioned about the clocks going back and I said it would be better, IMHO, if it was lighter in the late afternoon. Well apparently this very subject has come up in Parliament today and it turns out the Scots have vetoed it. Well, what the feck is that all about? 10% of the population of the UK can decide?

Re: UK to adopt European time??
My Dad only drinks loose tea. He says the t-bags are shite. He brought some loose tea in a little plastic bag to Italy once. The customs stopped him thinking he had drugs. They suggested a strip search. He told them to feck off. Just because they invented homosexuality he didn't want to be converted. Customs pissed themselves laughing and told him to carry on. They didn't even take the tea off him!

Don't worry. If they are funny, they're funny. Anyway, we have plenty of English ones! I've always said if you can't laugh at yourself, you can't laugh at someone else.
