Only a matter of time before this happens all over the eurozone. It costs more to mint them than they are worth. Probably happen in the UK as well with pennies.

I remember decimalization, everything seemed real cheap, then it crept up to double

When I lived out Tenerife I had a dish full of the things as well, then one day when in the bank I noticed the person in front of me handing over clear pLastic tubes which held exactly a euro in either 1c or 2c pieces, the teller in return handed the person back notes to the exact value of the coins, plus a quantity of empty plastic tubes... When getting served I asked the teller could anybody get the plastic tubes or was it a business thing, anybody could do it, so after that each time I visited the bank for whatever reason I handed over my plastic tubes full of coins, didn't get a fortune back each time, but enough for a few beers,,, better than them being at the bottom of a fountain...

Re: Ireland to get rid of 1c and2c coins
Feckin' British banks don't! They give you tiny wee plastic bags you put coins into to a specified amount and it doesn't matter a jot if you've re-counted it 4 times, they look at you as though you were the world's biggest fraudster!

Re: Ireland to get rid of 1c and2c coins
They also charge if you lodge coins into a business a/c but not a personal one?? AND, my bank will only take coin lodgements on a Tue morning or a Friday. AND, they only accept full bags with the correct amount. Then, after you fill your prepaid bag with the required amount of coins, they then go and sell those bags to the business customers who already paid to lodge coins the previous week!

Re: Ireland to get rid of 1c and2c coins
The little plastic tube/tray things are great cos they only hold the exact amount of coins so no need to sit counting them, bank just weighs them when you go in...

They're supposed to weigh the wee plastic bags too, but they still tut and shake their heads at you as if you were conning them! Bassas!

Re: Ireland to get rid of 1c and2c coins
Got to say didn't seem to bother them in Tenerife, as said I allways done it when I was at the counter for some other reason, just handed over the tubes, they weigh them and handed back notes, no paperwork, took seconds...

I have seen a machine in asda, you just pour coins in a chute, machine counts it then gives you a voucher for use at check-out when paying for your shopping.

There is one of those in my local supermarket as well. They charge 9% commission.

Yip they charge, plus have a default setting to give the money to a charity, you got to select to get your money less the percentage they take...
