Feckin parents. My dad hasn't got dressed since last Tuesday or shaved in 2 weeks. He has had only 2 breakfasts in that time as far as I know. No fluids apart from 2 cups of tea. Yesterday, sheep got into the garden. Out he goes at 3 in the afternoon in pyjamas chasing the sheep up the cul de sac onto the main road ( a feckin national road to Galway!) ffs. Don't know what kind of carnage he caused but cops weren't impressed .
Today, mother decided that my dad should be in a home but that she was perfectly fine to look after herself. "There's nothing wrong with me, Eamon" she said. "I'm not Eamon" I said. "David then" she said. "He died 16 years ago" I said. She doesn't remember falling last Monday or 2 weeks before that. She doesn't remember trying to boil a plastic kettle on top of the electric hob.
I lost it with the pair of them. Told them that they were treating the wishes of their sons with complete contempt. ( I was happy until today, to try to persuade them to get a live in carer. feck that now!!). I said straight out, that the HSE ( health authority) had deemed them incapable of independent living, and that only for myself and eldest brother, they would have been made wards of court last year. My dad was scaring Darragh. He looked like a feckin' tramp in all honesty. His slipper came off and his toenails must be 3 inches long. He also ( up til Tuesday) hadn't changed clothes in 5 weeks. This is a man that always wore a jacket and tie every single day of his life. My mother said its not her business to be "tidying up after him".
I've had enough. feck them. I don't have the strength to deal with my own family/life etc AND theirs on top. Told my brother that I wanted to instigate "ward of court" proceedings against them. Jim told me that the state would appoint a lawyer for my folks to fight their case and that it would drag on for a couple of years ( he obviously researched it already ). Anyway, we have decided that when one of them goes into hospital the next time, that on their release, they would be put straight into a nursing home to "convalesce", and also, that the one left at home, would NOT get any increase in home help, and that we would NOT be bringing that person to visit the other in the nursing home, only on the days that we call over anyway i.e. every Saturday for me and Sunday for Jim.
"I'm perfectly fine" she said. This is the same one that was on the feckin' phone to me yesterday while I was up to my tits in work, crying that and I quote" can't cope with the other person", She hates him that much, she won't even say his feckin' name. feck them!

Aw Dermo, sorry to hear that pal. Same thing happened to my mum when both my grandparents lost it. We'd put papa in a home and he died there and my mum swore she wasn't putting her mum in a home, it wasn't the feckin' home's fault, he was 86. So, mum looks after her mum in our house for about 3 years after that and it damn nearly killed her. She told us if ever she got dementia to put her in a home straight away because she didn't want to put any of us through what she went through. The home's the only way to go pal.
