Do you have a regional accent? Empty Do you have a regional accent?

    Post by Gypsy Mon 9 Jan 2012 - 10:06

When I read I hear a voice which I associate with the person writing - I think it is quite common.

I was reading Blyth Spirits 'good morning' post and he mentioned the sunrise over the Tyne. It suddenly occurred to me that the voice I hear when reading his posts is not Geordie. Yet when I read anything by Daryn it is always with a Geordie/Mackem accent. I hear a soft Scottish voice when reading posts from LR and a slight Yorkshire accent from McQueen and 3F's written voice is definitely Irish.

So am I correct? Is your accent from the region you live in or were you brought up somewhere totally different to where you have ended up and you have retained your original accent. Being a traveller I have a mixture of accents which over the years have all blended together so people rarely know precisely where I am from. When guessing they say Ireland, Wales, even Liverpool.

I'm terrible for picking up accents. I'll guarantee you that after meeting someone I'll start saying certain words like them within half an hour. I was raised in the midlands which has a very "neutral" accent anyway but I still have a twinge of a Dublin accent even though it's been 11 years since I left. ( When I say "neutral" , I mean to me, you guys would probably think it a strong Irish accent). I find, it's only when you meet s'one for the first time, that you realise they don't look or sound anything like the picture you had of them in your head.

And you would be correct Gypsy you should be hearing a Northumbrian accent, however as with regional accents it will be generalised by people hearing me who are not from 'up here' as geordie.
But believe a geordie accent (like most others) differs greatly depending on which of various surrounding areas of Newcastle you hail from.

Even I struggle understanding some strains of geordie accent and we live on the coast 15 minutes from Newcastle and work even closer to town.

Mind even had people on holiday ask which part of Scotland I'm from !!!
Mind our Northumbrian accent is the same the former pit town Ashington which is literally minutes up the road virtually has it's language, mind its also a place where they know if your not local and make you feel an outsider, strange place indeed.

I recognise that one instantly, it's the drawing of air through your teeth that gives it away (normally followed by a large monetary figure being spoken next). Do you have a regional accent? 3025408739
