    4.4 million journeys are expected on Spanish roads over the next few days, as Spaniards return home from their summer holidays.

    The DGT Central Traffic Authority has mounted a special traffic operation for the weekend, in place from Friday at 3pm until midnight on Sunday, involving more than 10,000 traffic police. All road works are to be put on hold this weekend.

    Following on from the above story, 15 people have died on Spanish roads over the weekend. In addition four people were seriously injured and another six slightly so. Of the accidents, the worst day was Saturday when six of the fatal accidents occurred. Read More


    In the Canary Islands there were two fatal accidents. On Saturday a man died when his car left the road in Fuerteventura. He was trapped inside the mangled wreckage and declare dead at the scene. Also in Fuerteventura, on Sunday a car left the road and plunged 70m into a ravine, killing a young man and seriously injuring two others. Police say that none of the occupants involved in the accident were wearing seat belts. A similar accident in Gran Canaria left a woman driver fighting for her life after she suffered what were described as severe head injuries.

    Meanwhile in Tenerife, two people, a man and a woman, were rushed to hospital following a crash on the island’s TF-5 motorway.
