I think they have made a mistake, I am sure even at his age he can still draw a lot of support and fans. He has nearly always been a good ambassador for the UK and even when he doesn´t play at his best he is better than the team England has at the moment. IMO a missed marketing opportunity.

In my eyes, the press made the whole of Beckham's generation of young players out to be a lot better than they actually were and the players believed all the hype.
That goes a long way towards explaining why England never actually seemed to achieve the success that everyone was lead to believe they would have.
The players were never actually as good as the press hyped them up to be.
